Step by step
How to take your shot
Always use the exact number of units on your prescription label. Units on the syringe are not the same as milligrams. If you're unsure, message us before injecting.
Step 1
Gather your supplies and wash your hands
You'll need your vial, a new syringe, alcohol pads and your sharps container. Wash your hands with soap and water.
Illustration. Contents and packaging may vary; your pharmacy includes what your prescription needs. Step 2
Check the label
Make sure it's your medication, check the beyond-use date, and check that the liquid is clear. Don't use it if it's cloudy or past the date.
Step 3
Wipe the vial top
Wipe the rubber top of the vial with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
Step 4
Draw air into the syringe
Pull the plunger back to your prescribed number of units, filling the syringe with air.
Step 5
Draw your dose
Insert the needle into the vial and push the air in. Turn the vial upside down and slowly draw your prescribed number of units.
Step 6
Remove air bubbles
With the needle still pointing up, gently tap the syringe so bubbles rise, then push them out. Check you still have your prescribed units.
Step 7
Choose a site
Your belly (at least 2 inches from the belly button), the front of your thigh, or the back of your upper arm. Use a different site each week.
Step 8
Clean the skin
Wipe the site with an alcohol pad and let it dry completely.
Step 9
Inject
Gently pinch the skin. Insert the needle at 90° (or 45° if you are lean). Push the plunger slowly, then count to 5 before removing.
Step 10
Dispose safely
Put the used syringe straight into your sharps container. Never reuse or share needles.
Step 11
Store the vial
Put the vial back in the fridge. Don't freeze it, and keep it away from light.
