Side effects and how to manage them
The common side effects of compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, simple ways to manage them, and when to get help right away.
What's common
Most side effects of GLP-1 medications affect the stomach. They are usually mild, and many people find they ease after the first few weeks or after a dose change. Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Reduced appetite
- Mild redness where you give the shot
Nausea
Eat smaller meals and stop when you feel comfortable, not full. Bland foods such as toast, crackers, rice or soup are often easier. Greasy, fried and very sweet foods can make nausea worse. Eat slowly, and try not to lie down right after eating.
Constipation
Drink plenty of water through the day. Include fiber from vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, and add gentle movement such as a daily walk. If constipation lasts more than a few days, let us know.
Diarrhea
Keep sipping fluids so you don't get dehydrated. Simple foods can help. If diarrhea is severe or doesn't stop, contact us.
Tiredness
Some people feel more tired at first. Rest when you need to, drink fluids and make sure you're still eating regular, balanced meals — including protein.
Redness at the shot site
Mild redness usually fades on its own. Use a different site each week, and always clean the skin and let it dry before your shot.
Everyday habits that can help
- Eat slowly and put your fork down between bites.
- Choose smaller plates and smaller portions.
- Include protein, such as eggs, fish, chicken, yogurt or beans, at each meal.
- Sip water through the day rather than large amounts at once.
- Go easy on greasy, fried and very sweet foods.
- Keep a short note of how you feel each day so you can share it with our team.
Side effects and dose changes
Side effects are often more noticeable in the first few days after starting or after a dose increase. That's one reason your provider raises the dose gradually. If side effects are hard to manage, your provider may keep you at the same dose for longer. Your price stays the same either way.
When to tell us
If a side effect bothers you, message or call our team. Your provider can review your dose. Please don't change your dose on your own.
When to get help right away
